“In the most southern part of the island was a forest called The Hungry Woods. There was a creature that resided in The Hungry Woods that was feared by all. However, because no one who ventured there had ever returned, little was known of the beast. All that was known was that the forest floor was littered with enormous pine cones. Everyone had their guesses as to the origin of the pine cones, but no one knew for sure.
The daughter of a soldier who fell victim to the woods vowed to find her father and sought the help of a powerful enchantress. She was given a crown made of sticks that had been collected from the outskirts of The Hungry Woods. Although it looked quite awkward, the enchantress promised she would not be seen by anything living in The Hungry Woods as long as she wore it. She placed it atop her head and set out to find her father.
As she walked deeper and deeper into the forest, she passed more and more of the infamous pine cones. She felt a strange connection to them, as if she had some sort of relationship with them that she could not understand. Several hundred feet later and she could feel the presence of her father somewhere near. In front of her was a cluster of pine cones, one of which was pulling her heart towards it. She approached and put her hand on its dry bark, then stumbled backwards with horror.
The pine cones did not fall from some tree in the heavens. They were people, turned by the magic some demonic forest demon. She collapsed against a tree and stared at what her father had become, forsaking the gods she grew up praising.” -M.D. Walter
